NYLCA is a professional association for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) in New York City.
The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding verifies that "International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are the only health care professionals certified in lactation care. They have specific clinical expertise and training in the clinical management of complex problems with lactation." No one can call themselves by the trademarked term "Registered Lactation Consultant" without meeting the rigorous criteria of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Breastfeeding Report Card for 2016 acknowledges that most mothers want to breastfeed and do give it a try. Nevertheless, women may not be getting the help they need to continue for the recommended duration. Among other measures, the CDC suggests that "A strong statewide group of professional breastfeeding experts (IBCLCs) is needed to assist the mother-infant pair, create and administer lactation programs, and educate other health professionals about breastfeeding."
